The history of human rights is associated in the first instance with the Atlantic revolutions: the American in 1776 and the French in 1789 and rights are about justifying the foundation of a sovereign state. In 1945 the Nuremberg trials determined for the first time in human history that individuals and groups had rights. What is the larger agenda of human rights? How do we take action to maintain a community in which we can have what Hannah Arendt called “the right to have rights”?
