I am the Hans Rausing Professor of the History of Science and Technology at King’s College London. My main work is on the history of technology, particularly the history of global technology in the 20th century. I also work on modern British history, on 20th century British history.

We certainly think of coal as a technology of the Industrial Revolution. However, more coal is dug up and burnt today than ever in world history!
The answer to the question ‘Does technology drive change?’ is that we don’t know.
We have to take these concepts of industrial revolutions, technological revolutions, technologically driven long waves or cycles and general-purpose technologies with an enormous pinch of salt.
