Professor of English (1956-2021), University of Oxford
Laura Marcus (1956-2021), academic, critic and writer, was Professor of English at the University of Oxford. Her research interests covered a range of topics in the 20th and 21st century, with some look back to the 19th century. She was particularly interested in modernist literature and culture in early film and early film theory, in the history of psychoanalysis and in modernist fiction. She focused on the work of Virginia Woolf. One of her last projects was on the concept of rhythm across a range of artistic disciplines.
Virginia Woolf became one of the very greatest of 20th century novelists, with work that began in perhaps the more realist tradition, though always realism with a twist.
